Gordon's Music Learning Theory is a set of ideas about how we learn music. I hold a Bachelors and Masters in Music Education from the University of South Carolina, and Mastership Certifications in Elementary and Early Childhood Music from the Gordon Institute of Music Learning. Four years in the South, and two years in Pakistan teaching Elementary music and I launched out on my own to pioneer cutting-edge (though truly an ancient and time-tested method) music education for homeschool groups, babies, young tots, and big people who aren't stifled by traditional music teaching philosophies. Two Terrible Goals for Music Education

When you consider signing up your child for music lessons, what do you want for them?

If you want them to have “fun”, they most definitely will fail to become a functional musician.

If you let your child believe learning to play the piano (or any instrument) should be “easy”, they will be in for misery and disappointment.

If you want them to learn a skill, and are willing to travel that journey with them at least the first few years, then the satisfaction, motivation, and “fun” will happen when their hard work and discipline pays off in playing “easily”. Watch them flourish.

Dan Severino posted this a few years back, but it is never more relevant and important than today. “The Truth About Music Lessons” is well worth the read, even if it stings a little.

It’s just like how we learn a language. Listen – speak – converse – read – write. In that order. You don’t force a 9-month old baby to read before he is even speaking. Yet traditional music teaching methods do just this: they compel young children to read notation, push a button for each dot, before they have ever learned to “speak” the words (tonal and rhythm patterns) of music. It’s a bit absurd.

Music Moves For Piano is a piano method for the 21st century that incorporates group learning, ear training, movement and singing activities, sequential keyboard technique, duet and ensemble playing, and improvisation in every lesson.

Music Moves For Piano applies theories of audiation, or Music Learning Theory, in a sequential learning process that guides students how to hear music with understanding.

Extensive research about how the brain perceives and learns music provides answers to the following questions and many more:

  • Why can students play difficult repertoire and not be able to play “Happy Birthday” without music?
  • Why can some students play cadences fluently, yet be unable to improvise on tonic and dominant chords?
  • Why can many adults, after years of study, only play a few pieces that they learned in high school?
  • Why are so many adults unable to read unfamiliar music or accompany singers and instrumentalists?
  • Why do creating and improvising seem impossible to many adults who can read music?

The answer: These students have not learned how to think musically. They have not learned to ‘audiate’ music. Audiation is essential for developing musicianship. Audiation is to music what thought is to language and visualization is to what we see.

Research has shown that we learn music like we learn language – first by listening, then speaking, then reading and writing. Just like language, music has context – meter and tonality, and is made up of vocabulary – or patterns. Essential to understanding music is audiation – thinking in music.

Students achieve musical literacy through the development of audiation skills and performing skills.

In Music Moves for Piano students learn to:
